Journal 1: What is "good writing"?
Writing is a mix of interesting things. At times, I find writing to be a creative outlet; an escape, something to be enjoyed. There are other instances where writing becomes merely a tedious task in the form of assignments and essays. Don’t get me wrong, I have a great deal of respect for writing and language, but I have to be in the mood to write. Without the proper mindset, sitting down to write becomes an impossible stressful situation.
Good Writing is IMPACTFUL, leaves an IMPRESSION, and is able to CAPTURE the attention of the audience. Good writing should reveal TRUTH and have MEANING. Being able to write well is being able to understand and control language. Two is greater than one and finding that balance where you can write with words instead of using words is something that I admire. No one wants to read the works of a pretentious writer who throws around big vocabulary for the sake of it.
But then again, these are just my opinions. Language is an art and like all art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In the video “This is Water”?, the speaker mentions that life is “how you choose to see it”. We decide what has meaning and what doesn’t for ourselves because we all have different experiences and an article, quote, or poem will speak to each person differently.
When it comes to writing, I do better as a response writer. I am too much of a perfectionist (there is no such thing and I am by no means perfect, but I sometimes try too hard to make my work perfect) and trying to be an originator holds too much pressure because I will never think an idea is good enough.
